Who is phoniatrics for?
If you have hoarseness lasting more than 2 weeks, voice loss, a raspy or weak voice, pain when speaking, a "lump in the throat", vocal fatigue, or you often "clear your throat" while speaking — a phoniatrician is the right choice.
We are especially helpful to teachers, lecturers, nursery staff, singers, actors, tour guides, presenters, call-centre staff and anyone who uses their voice a great deal.
The most common causes of hoarseness
Inflammation/laryngitis, vocal cord nodules, a vocal cord polyp, reflux (GORD/LPR), voice overuse, smoking, dry air, hormonal changes, a post-operative state, the thyroid.
An early examination shortens recovery and reduces the risk of permanent voice changes.
Vocal cord videostroboscopy
Videostroboscopy is a specialised examination in which stroboscopic light and a camera allow a "slow-motion" view of vocal cord vibration. It helps us detect tiny irregularities — nodules, polyps, inflammation, incomplete closure — that are harder to spot on a standard examination.
